Om sesjonen
Electronic voting has been back in production in Switzerland since 2023, and more than 15 electronic election events have been held over the last three years. Starting from the basics, this talk presents how the e‑voting system in use works, covering both the voter journey and the cryptographic protocol underlying the system. Emphasis is placed on the trade-offs between the system's security properties, usability, and performance. In particular, we explain how return codes are used to ensure individual verifiability of the ballots cast. We also discuss measures taken to strengthen the transparency and auditability of the e‑voting system. Further, we compare the system design of the Swiss Post Voting System to other real-world e-voting systems, in particular to the Norwegian Internet Voting Protocol used in Norway's e-voting pilot projects in 2011 and 2013. We highlight key protocol differences, especially regarding security properties, trust assumptions and identity infrastructure. The talk concludes with open challenges in e-voting and ongoing work on further distributing trust between system components.
